The Canadian Firearms Center has developed some handy acronyms to make it easy to remember the safe handling procedures.
ACTS covers general handling procedure
- A – Assume the Firearm is loaded
- C - Control the Muzzle direction at all times
- T - Keep your finger off the Trigger and out of the trigger guard unless ready to shoot
- S - PROVE that the firearm is Safe
PROVE covers the procedure to unload a firearm and render it safe
- P – Point the firearm in the safest availabl direction
- R – Remove the source of ammunition
- O – Observe the chamber
- V – Verify the feeding path
- E – Examine the bore
All of this is just a fancy way of saying:
- All firearms are loaded. Please treat them as such
- Do not point the firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy
- Keep the finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard unless you’re ready to shoot
- Be sure of your target and what is behind and in front of it
