The Canadian Firearms Center has developed some handy acronyms to make it easy to remember the safe handling procedures.

ACTS covers general handling procedure

  • A – Assume the Firearm is loaded
  • C - Control the Muzzle direction at all times
  • T - Keep your finger off the Trigger and out of the trigger guard unless ready to shoot
  • S - PROVE that the firearm is Safe

PROVE covers the procedure to unload a firearm and render it safe

  • P – Point the firearm in the safest availabl direction
  • R – Remove the source of ammunition
  • O – Observe the chamber
  • V – Verify the feeding path
  • E – Examine the bore

All of this is just a fancy way of saying:

  1. All firearms are loaded. Please treat them as such
  2. Do not point the firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy
  3. Keep the finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard unless you’re ready to shoot
  4. Be sure of your target and what is behind and in front of it
